Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) affects flat-faced breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs. BOAS results in breathing difficulties and gastrointestinal disturbances due to their shortened skull structure, oversized tongues and small airways. Left untreated, BOAS often leads to serious chronic health issues. Patients with BOAS have a significant reduction in their quality of life,  and over time often develop irreversible airway collapse.

We routinely perform the 5 in 1 procedure with the aim of maximising airflow. This procedure is currently regarded as the gold standard in management of brachycephalic breeds and includes:

1. Removal of everted laryngeal saccules – sacculectomy.
2. Shortening and thinning of the saft palate – techniques include the latest procedures such as folding flap palatoplasty or H-palatoplasty.
3. Tonsillectomy
4. Ala Vetsibuloplasty – opens up the inside of the nose.
5. Rhinoplasty – to open up the opening of the nostrils.
